* Free Historic Legal Internet Books

While supplies last, I am giving away old copies of books that I’ve written, including ‘The Legal List,’ which documents early legal Internet pioneers.

The Legal List” was the first book published simultaneously in print and on the Internet. All editions of the book were published using a novel (and open-source-like) distribution method (free electronically, costs to print), which is described in the book’s print-and-pay copyright notice. The last edition was published in 1995 (ten years ago next month).

It is interesting looking at “The Legal List” ten years later. When the fifth edition was published (August 1994), there were only 78 law firms listed with any sort of Internet presence (and “Internet presence” included firms that had only an email address). Only five of those first law firms on the Internet had websites, and only one (Venable) had a website with its own domain name.

Here are the first 78 law firms on the Internet, including the first five law firms on the web (numbers represent the section of “The Legal List” in which each appears):

  1. These books and the information they bring should be required reading for anyone learning the history of the internet and the law. I hire interns from the local university and they are amazed that life existed for anyone, much less lawyers without the internet.

  2. Those books looks interesting, I’m pondering if I should get one! It would be a great piece to have even if it just sat on a shelf for a while. I would love to know which law firm was actually the first too. I wish I could find an internet archive that crawled sites from 1994.
