* The New York Yankees: 26-Time* World Series Champs

The steroid era tarnishes the modern Yankee dynasty.

The New York Yankees are 26-time World Series champs. They won the fall classic in 1923, 1927, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1943, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1962, 1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000.

But four of those championships came in the steroid era. The Mitchell Report was released on 12/13/07 and named the following current and former Yankee players as likely users of steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). The numbers in parenthesis indicate the years the players were on a World Series winning Yankees team.

  1. Ricky Bones (1996)
  2. Kevin Brown
  3. Jose Canseco (2000)
  4. Roger Clemens (2000)
  5. Bobby Estalella
  6. Jason Giambi
  7. Jason Grimsley (2000)
  8. Glenallen Hill (2000)
  9. Darren Holmes (1998)
  10. David Justice (2000)
  11. Chuck Knoblauch (1998, 1999, 2000)
  12. Josias Manzanillo
  13. Hal Morris
  14. Daniel Naulty (1999)
  15. Denny Neagle (2000)
  16. Andy Pettitte (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000)
  17. Gary Sheffield
  18. Mike Stanton (1998, 1999, 2000)
  19. Randy Velarde
  20. Ron Villone
  21. Rondell White
  22. Todd Williams

So it would seem to me that these four World Series victories are tainted:

  1. 1996 – NY Yankees 4, Atlanta 2
  2. 1998 – NY Yankees 4, San Diego 0
  3. 1999 – NY Yankees 4, Atlanta 0
  4. 2000 – NY Yankees 4, NY Mets 1

I’m guessing that the Braves, Padres, and Mets would like a recount. Just based on the above list, 2000 seems like the most juiced World Series in history.

From now on, let’s just refer to The New York Yankees as 26-time* World Series champs.

    1. 2009 was the most tainted of all thanks to the biggest steroid violator in the history of the game, Alex Rodriguez.

  1. Did any other MLB team so blatantly tolerate, if not actually solicit, steroid users, all in the “pursuit of excellence”? No: I am not forgetting Bonds and Braun and who knows which others who might help compete with such a dubious claim for “excellence”?

  2. if mitchell had more sources, this report would have cast a wider net.
    including supposed “clean” beaner teams
remember even today the players get advanced warning of testing
    cheers

  3. After reading the list of names on the Mitchell Report, there were many names that were unexpected. One name however, surly is not a surprise. That player is Kevin Brown. Could anyone forget the former Yankee pitcher in a “roid rage” punching a cement wall injuring his hand and causing the Yankees to loose many games without his overpriced arm? If memory serves the Boston Red Sox benefited from the aformentioned conduct. It should also be noted that very few if any markee Red Sox players appeared on the list.

  4. Greetings Branden,

I was born in 1966, so in my lifetime (i.e. in this generation), the Yankees have won six championships. The World Series victories of the 2004 and 2007 Red Sox occurred after mandatory steroid testing, i.e. after the “steroid era.”

So that’s six Yankees wins in this generation, 2 Red Sox wins. If you take away the four tainted Yankee titles, then the Red Sox and Yankees are tied with World Series victories 2-2 in my lifetime.

    Regards,
    Erik

  5. ha ha. you wish. and, of course that obscure boston team (i forget their name) is just lily white and untainted. and there goes another flying pig.

  6. Everyone had their share of players involved in the steroid era the only reason there are more yankees players is because thats where the source came from Every team that has won the world series is going to have players who cheated so you can put an asterisk in front of every championship won in the steroid era if you want to put one in front of the yankees and for the record if you take those 4 away they still tower over the closest team to them in number of championships
